If you already brush your teeth two times a day, it can be tempting to think that you are doing enough to maintain good oral health. However, if you really want to take care of your oral health, dentists recommend that you floss twice a day as well.

Smart Reason #1: Remove Plaque from Your Teeth

If you only brush your teeth, you are not actually removing all the plaque from your teeth. When you brush your teeth, you remove plaque from the sides and front of your teeth. However, you are not able to remove the plague from the in-between your teeth, which is where a lot of plaque resides. When you brush and floss, you are able to remove plaque from all the sides and surfaces of your teeth your toothbrush can't reach.

Smart Reason #2: Prevent Tooth Decay

By flossing and removing all the plaque from your mouth each day, you will help create a healthy surface for your teeth.

By flossing daily, you will help decrease the chance that you will develop tooth decay. Avoiding tooth decay will help keep your mouth healthy and will help keep your breath smelling good.

Smart Reason #3: Prevent Gingivitis

Third, when you floss, you are not just taking care of your teeth, you are also taking care of your gums. When you floss, you are able to remove plaque from around your gums as well.

Also, with regular flossing, you will be aware early on if something is wrong with your gums. If your gums start to bleed randomly after you have been flossing on a regular basis, that is a sign that you are at risk of gingivitis, and you can get help right away to stop that from helping.

Smart Reason #4: Overall Healthier Body

Your oral health is connected to your overall health. When you have good oral health, which flossing and brushing twice a day will help you achieve, will allow you to reduce the risk of many serious health issues, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and rheumatoid arthritis. By keeping your oral health good, you decrease the risk of serious health issues. 

Smart Reason #5: Better Looking Smile

Finally, when you floss every day, you are going to have a better looking smile. Your teeth are going to be cleaner, and your breath may smell better, leading to a better looking smile.

Dedicate four minutes of your day to flossing in the morning and evening when you brush your teeth in order to enjoy better oral health and an overall healthier lifestyle. Be sure to also visit your dentist every six months for professional cleaning and care.

As a young adult, I never missed a hair coloring appointment or hesitated to run out to the mall to grab the latest trendy clothing item, but unfortunately, I didn't care for my teeth as well as I should. While I never used to be one to "shy away" from photos, I started fearing the camera after I saw how bad my teeth looked in one.
